Apple is updating the iPhone with even more emoji characters. iOS 17.4 introduces new ways to express approval or denial, break through the chains, rise from the ashes, or just express that limes are superior to lemons. There’s also a mushroom that looks less out of Mario World and more out of the grocery store.

The new emoji characters are also available in macOS 14.4 on the Mac, watchOS 10.4 for Apple Watch, and iPadOS 17.4 for iPad. For Apple Vision Pro owners, they appear in visionOS 1.1 developer beta.

iOS 17.4 beta has been available to developers and beta testers since last month, and it brings a lot of significant changes such as App Marketplaces for installing apps outside the App Store in the EU. As the Digital Markets Act (DMA) antitrust legislation deadline is approaching, it seems that Apple is getting ready to release iOS 17.4 RC as soon as tomorrow.

Update: Apple tells Joe Rossingol that this is a bug and will be fixed. In iOS 17.4, users will not receive this alert when they download from their default app marketplace. “App installation sheets are automatically turned off for installations from a user’s default marketplace,” Apple says on its website.

iOS 17.4 includes a number of changes that come in response to the Digital Markets Act in Europe. One of those changes is support for alternative app marketplaces, and Apple is making a change to its own App Store too.
