Didn’t ELIZA do this in the 1960s? I guess it depends on how “natural language” is defined. (Do emoji count?)

Comment on First Hollywood film edited with Final Cut Pro X hits theaters this week by Mario Vivanco https://9to5mac.com/2015/02/25/final-cut-x-hollywood/#comment-341167 Fri, 15 Jun 2018 20:50:08 +0000 http://9to5mac.com/?p=366763#comment-341167 In reply to Oliver Moereels.

So, at this time June 2018, what is your opinion of FCP X 10.4, are you still using it? Or you moved to other software? hen I read this kind of news that some “Hollywood” company used FCPX for a feaured film, I wonder if Apple gave them some license with support to use the FCPX in order to test the software in the real life and to get a testimonial (from the Hollywood!) that FCP X is the best.

Of course the software doesn’t make more or less creative. However, there technical facilities that we can not control. I care a lot for chromakeying. which one offers better performance and “natural” look, FCPX or Premiere?

And now that these softwares (even Premiere Pro CC) are becoming more optimized for laptops. Sometimes, I feel that FCPX is made more for domestic users. when you see the Compressor and those options like “Compress for youtube, compress for facebook..” why? just to make easy? A professional editor should know the settings for youtube or facebook combined with his own preferences regarding bit rate, frame size, format, etc.

What a tragic event. I have always supported self driving cars because I see the benefits in the long run for our society. When the women was hit and by the way, I do not have all the facts. I was thinking I should not support the idea. However, just think when there will be a day that no one will be killed by a drunk driver or better yet a distracted driver. Also, think about how much time will be saved going from point A to B. With every new risky venture, there is always death that comes with it. When I think about it that way, even if it was my own family member. I still think self driving cars are the way to go.

Apple caused this problem in the first place by electing to misleading people rather than allowing the quality of the product to speak for itself. I really hope that there is indeed bite to this bark but realistically there won’t likely be at all. Apple has too much money to care and as it seems Brazil isn’t a major market for them anyway.

I’ll occasionally use it to control the lights at home with Siri, but I usually take it off when I get home. I’m still on gen 1.. maybe I’ll consider an upgrade in the future, I hear the recent ones are a lot faster (not to mention Series 3 being compatible with Qi charging).

As for Apple Pay.. I hardly use it, because there are so few opportunities. Take the example from the article — Starbucks in the US doesn’t accept Apple Pay at the register. But I always use the app to order anyway (even if I’ve already walked into the store). The only places I go with any frequency that accept it are Duane Reade and McDonald’s, and perhaps the occasional vending machine. So many places just don’t accept contactless payments.

Comment on Apple plans to refresh iOS 9, OS X 10.11 using new Apple Watch font by Champ McKiver https://9to5mac.com/2015/05/20/apple-plans-to-refresh-ios-9-os-x-10-11-using-new-apple-watch-font/#comment-340665 Wed, 25 Oct 2017 01:51:55 +0000 http://9to5mac.com/?p=380605#comment-340665 San Francisco is abhorring to the psyche.

It may not be apparent to all the eyes out there, but the typeface is still considered fairly new in contrast to Helvetica’s decades-long proven track-record with historical conditioning to back it up.

Sorry, San Francisco, you haven’t even reached puberty yet, let alone should you be headlining daddy’s company all-of-a-sudden. Like fine wine, a good typeface needs precious time to properly age in the psyche of its designers. The new typeface was pushed out way too soon. Might look pretty good today, but wait a few seasons, it’s going need tweaks here and there, and before you know it, it’ll already be time to change typefaces again in keeping up with fashion.

It’s a shame the typographers couldn’t see how awkward WATCH looks by itself. Now when we are presented with new Apple ads, they just aren’t feeling at all like Apple. The red lipstick sexiness is nowhere to be found. Instead, we’ve been duped by its slightly handicapped doppelgänger donning black Velcro sneakers.

For example, let’s take the all caps, ‘WATCH’ and look at it next to Helvetica Neue. There’s no comparison, to the trained and conditioned eye of the professional typographer, Helvetica clearly wins. WATCH written in San Francisco looks “immature and awkward”. It does look like what’s been said of a “Chinese knock-off” which is a hilarious but sad reality—it’s been an incredibly short-sighted move on Apple’s part to mess with the fine nuances of type, adopting an unfamiliar shape and sound for the company’s communication during a pivotal, ‘whole world is watching’ product release as the WATCH. Whatever happened to Steve Jobs’ once exalted praise for the knowledge of typography? Didn’t his designers get the memo?

I totally understand that the layperson will not have the eye of sophistication to pick up nuances of typeface design, but their consciousness will feel it. I will tell you that type is a dedicated and learned art and those with eyes for typography are the visual musicians of our era, for each successful typeface designed, they enter the public psyche and create emotionally and visually harmonic associations to the heart. Helvetica has always been a visually sound typeface that moves billions of us every day. We are conditioned to it, subliminally and appreciatively, our eye and brain take it in easily, invisibly, and quickly.

It should be Apple’s smart move to realize that San Francisco is still not ready to be served to the masses because it doesn’t look perfect in a plethora of situations and arrangements. ‘WATCH’ being a prime example of it looking just bad from the get-go. Especially in all caps. An unsightly n00b move.

Helvetica is sexy and Apple is sexy. That’s why Apple stores are in fashion malls. That’s why Helvetica has been used by almost every high-end fashion label at some time. Typeface for a brand is everything. I hope Apple will see a proper typeface tailor next time to avoid any sartorial lettering problems that will subliminally affect the way each of their hundreds of millions of users will feel in their heart if not seen by their eyes.

It’s very limited if you only have the free version. It cannot export and does not support cloud storage other than OneDrive. It may be cross-platform but you are stuck with OneNote due to lack of export and cloud storage options, unless you also have the desktop version.

OneNote may be a good option if you’re already in the Microsoft ecosystem. OneNote for iOS cannot export notes into another (industry standard) format. Also, it does not support cloud storage other than OneDrive. So unless you also have OneNote for the desktop, your notes are not portable if you use OneNote for iOS – your notes are captive to OneNote and OneDrive.

Comment on How-To: Get yourself an affordable multi-room AirPlay setup by Henrik Krolykke Schmidt https://9to5mac.com/2015/08/31/how-to-airplay-multi-room-budget/#comment-340648 Fri, 13 Oct 2017 05:55:37 +0000 http://9to5mac.com/?p=394896#comment-340648 2 years after this article was published I still find that AirPlay is the best alternative to Sonos. I have made a true multiroom stereo setup with several (8+) AirPlay receivers capable of playing synchronized audio through my whole house from any iOS device connected to my wireless network. My devices include several Apple TV’s (2,3 and 4. generation), AirPort Express and also devices with built in AirPlay support like a Denon surround receiver. The primary key in my setup is the Synology NAS that I have too. It has a feature called Audio Station, and their iOS app called DS audio then let me play my own CD collection that I have ripped in FLAC format and stored on the NAS and my favorite internet radio stations as well. Another key to make this work without problems is a well working network, wireless or prefferably cabled. If you make it wireless you should make sure that your house is well covered with as little channel overlap from yourself and your neighbors as possible. The “only” thing I really miss in this setup is the capability to connect to Spotify and play from there. A feature I would have loved would be a function to make the NAS work as a AirPlay receiver so that I from any iOS device could play any thing and stream it (in sync of course) to multiple rooms. With Apple’s release of iOS 11 AirPlay 2 is near, it should come this December, it will be exiting to see what that will bring to the scene. It is also said that Sonos some time through 2018 will feature AirPlay 2 which means that you should be able to see your zones as AirPlay 2 destinations. That could mean that 2018 will be the year that I surrender and convert to Sonos, but it will cost me an arm and a leg, especially if I don’t give buy on my demand for stereo in every room.

It is NOT waterproof. To call it such, is false advertising if you ask me. I spent $100 for this supposedly waterproof product. I even had the guys at VERIZON put it on for me to make sure that it was installed correctly. Well, 2 and half months later I was around water for the first time and the product leaked. I did not go deep sea diving…I just wanted to take pictures of my kids at the water park. My case was not damaged previously. There were no cracks, or even scratches. To make a long story short, the phone is ruined and my insurance for the phone is charging me $200 to replace it. Lifeproof says that they only cover their product, not what’s inside it. They said that they could send me a new case. What good is a new case? The first one didn’t work. I’m not about to trust my new phone near water with any of their products…especially, when they won’t stand behind their product. If the new case leaked, the cost of replacing it will once again fall on me. Do not waste your money on this product.

I contacted ClamCase about this, as I believe they should replace it. I have never heard back. My next case will be the Belkin Qode.

When you factor in that a moleskine can cost up to 20usd or more, the notability’s 4usd is nothing. Plus you can reuse notability for ever. A moleskine gets full before the term ends and you have to buy more. Over the course of four years, the cost add up. Not to mention that you can save more buying digital ebooks rather than physical text books. Using an ipad as note takimg definitely isn’t that bad. By the way, for the price of the apple pencil you can get two decent fountain pens. But you have to constantly buy inks for them too. So the cost can still add up. Going paperless definitely has its cost savings. And no more issues of coming to class/meeting with the wrong notebook/or forgetting to bring a notebook at all. Most of us have our ipads with us all the time.

Look carefully at that command. See the thing right before the word “background?” As it is rendered here and in most applications, it is what is called a “dash.” Some publications call it an “en-dash,” and some an “em-dash.” Doesn’t matter–Terminal doesn’t like any kind of dash. The command as rendered brought up a list of permitted commands to use with “sudo softwareupdate.” Terminal wants two hyphens, – not a dash –. If you type two hyphens into most applications, OS X “helpfully” converts them to the dash, and Terminal refuses to work. You can launch TextEdit, go to Preferences, and stop this behavior–in TextEdit. Find a way to type two -s, and the command will work

NFC chips are not just little radios that allow your phones and tablets to communicate wirelessly to tap to pay compatible payment terminals, I mean yes they do, do that, but that’s not all they can do… an NFC chip is basically a miniature computer inside your handheld computer that can run independently and thus if your phone or tablet (regardless of OS or brand) is compromised in any way, that doe not affect the NFC chip, cuz it is it’s own little computer all by itself. It can store data, do encryption, create tables of tokens, talk to your device’s OS send and receive wireless data, and much more, so in the case of in-app purchasing its the computer that gives the app a token or basically a code that can be used to represent your payment card for one transaction… in short an NFC chip is ‘needed’ for in-app purchases for security purposes. so yes it’s like a volt for your credit card info … it’s just also capable of slipping a vendor $23.47… provided it has its antennae that is.

They have THOUSANDS of backers on indigogo that have been waiting for almost a full year since they were promised delivery of products,

not only did they supply them late,
they have quietly attempted to flat out NOT SEND parts of the campaign promised
when they finally deliver, the goods are not built to the specifications detailed (reporting as little as HALF the wattage of what was promised)
or they come with no specification sheets/details because the specifications stated where a lie
and even after all that, the products die extremely quickly

A word of warning to all, never purchase from charge tech, their products are not reliable, chargetech is a scam

How can you trust a company blatantly seeking for total mind control of it’s users? Apple is a sect and many journalists are members. Since they blatantly devoted their souls to Apple they became dirty propagandists. They are totally shameless when they see how Apple can lie and distort facts.

Apple has total control on journalists because Jobs have sold to the media owners the idea that it could be possible to have total mind control over everybody througt a tight control of information and communication technologies. That’s why the media big bosses want you to use only Apple devices and are making massive free advertisement and blantant propaganda for Apple, so they are sure that you won’t escape from their propaganda. And it’s working. Internet was a free space to counter the mainstream propaganda on the same foot of equality. Apple Google and app-centered internet (so-called Web 2.0) is the contrary, you’re not on the same foot but you are totaly enslaved to the device maker who can censor you at will. The purpose of Apple is to “Jail” Internet in tightly controlled apps trough tightly controled devices.

Apple is a totalitarism. Steve Jobs and his successor Tim Cook are the most EVIL people on Earth. Tim Cook is liying as he is breathing. Being fan of them is like being fan of Goebbels according to me. How can be “fan” of the way someone is liying, at least you are a dishonest liar too. Is it a “talent” to lie to people and constantly distort the facts to spin failures as “success”? 90% of Apple fanboys beliefs about computing are false and propaganda from Apple. Some of them still believe that there’s no viruses on Macs, until now.

Apple’s propaganda is a poison that kills people’s brains. It’s pure brainwashing. They believe S. Jobs has invented all computing on Earth. They believe in lies and propaganda, and they seem to love it, they say “it’s bad, but brillantly done”. I can “brillantly” rob your wallet but would you appreciate it? But when it’s come to Apple fanatics have no brain anymore. Some of them are really “in touch” with Apple’s philosophy because they like the way Apple is liying and they want to be part of the dominant liars club. They are like the early nazis, and their high tech medias for the time (radio, theatre movies, high circulation newspappers, this was brand new tech in the 30s like smartphones and internet now). I hate Apple because it’s not a tech company, it’s a sect seeking for power and total control over the media, since the begining.

This makes sense when using the USB-MIDI connection because you see your Prophet in the list of midi destinations. I’m using a Saffire PRO’s midi output connected via a midi cable to my Monologue’s midi input and this simply doesn’t work. I cant get midi to send to my Korg Monologue. My Korg Volca’s work fine with simple midi cable connection. Very confused right now!

I suffered this problem. My Mac is 5 years old. Took it to Apple today, they quoted £525 for the replacement card and labour – but then said I didn’t need to pay for it as my computer was less than 6 years old and had been purchased direct from Apple on-line!

VERY happy and impressed!

Hello,

As a woman that started using an ATARI, then onto Apple computers such as a Lombard bought on ebay for heotel email, G3’s, G4’s, Powermacs (still own them – collecting dust), imac, mini mac and all the zip drives, big floppy disks, little floppies – you get the picture . . .

I have 10 year lovely, dented, duck taped battery door, beat up physically, still working Macbook Pro that has seen me through endless jobs and trips – getting heavy though!!!! I have seen more backup drives burn out over the years than this gal!

I am now on Sierra with my desktop mac, run Adobe CS and know my lovely older laptop can not really profit by any more upgrades. I have gone through 2 Apple batteries, 1 generic (only spent roughly $300 in 10 years) and I have been running it without a battery for 2+ years, so constantly plugged in.

It is time to make my oldie but goodie a kitchen clock screensaver, with no FEAR that any guest will damage it while it creeps towards its use of only searching for recipes, checking emails, playing my music collection (2500 songs of choice) and watching youtube and netflix, with NO FEAR of spills bangs.

This has been the best MAC ever, dear APPLE!!!!

It has always been there for me, so darn reliable day and night for my work, family vacations, night lights, music, dance parties, photo slideshows, presentations at work and home. My macbook pro ($2100 CDN back then) topped my first ebay laptop purchase, still owned – the Lombard with 4MB ram LOL. Used for checking emails in hotels while travelling. Smiles!

I am a slight nerd that was able to stick a screwdriver into the crushed ethernet port, after I dropped and crushed it, and it still worked, 6 years ago. I have banged it, dropped it, duck taped it and plugged it into many locations and it still wants to work!

What I know it can no longer do is have the latest OS (Yet maybe someone wants to ry to convince me about upgrades. . . ). I can still run ADOBE CS, but GOOGLE has retired us, and I feel “she” is too old now after 10 years to squeeze her, $2400 back then is now $3600 that I don’t really want to spend . . .

There’s my laptops story and I have the need of speed to make it to an early retirement.

Any tips are welcome in what to buy. I feel resolution is first, speed next and of course screen size, track pad, backlit keyboard, usb drives, hdmi, firewire, scsi (kiddin’), cd drive (LOL), headphone jack . . . and I do like the gold colour . . . actually with my name engraved next to the apple logo, and a photo op next to my old Macbook Pro, I will be a tester of whatever you suggest! And tell you what I think! I started on an Atari . . . with a 1MB hard drive, a HP printer, that took, due to lack of memory 1/2 hour to print a beautiful 1/2 pager, letter size.

I have used BIG floppies, many zip drives, disks, and watched APPLE grow towards the global cellular world.

I used to drive a 68 Chevy Chevelle because I like solid machines, so from my solid Lombard, to ipad, iphone (3, 3s, 4, 4s, 5, ^s and now what – – – agh 7) . . . et al, nothing seems to have to endured like my Macbook Pro. I used to love you Apple (well except when you first switched to making product overseas that caused my tower to last as long as a year!). But you fixed that many years ago. I am however worried about the weighlessness and marketing that has happened over the years. My mind feels, I need to know that a bounce, bang and checked in macbook pro, while travelling, may stand up to my dear oldie.

Done rambling, please respond if you have an oldie macbook pro as sweet as mine with any tips of buying a new one – why do I crincge?

What can I look forward to . . .whatever will last 10+years.

Mrs – happy to think I can review a new Macbook Pro (Just asking – be nice APPLE), or check out refurbished with confidence, or lend mine out to you one day to try to see why mine stills works?

.

– for the people who can’t figure out the “use case”, don’t worry you don’t have to. Apple already has, and thats why they are a billion dollar company and you are , well not. i’m guessing you are not into your own health & fitness, b/c Apple Watch , now with gps and water proof is a very viable option for those “in motion” .

This is why bloggers are not journalists. They just swallow that this was done to improve the customer experience. This is probably what the corporate memo said. These “writers” never question anything (companies rarely if ever do *anything* to improve the customer experience; they do it to improve the bottom line. But unless the tech writers go kissy-kissy to all things tech, they won’t get previews to the next kewel gadget.
